ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN (CATALOGING) LIBRARY

ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN - 8020

GRADE - 106

PAY RANGE - $22.41 - $31.95/hr - plus a comprehensive benefits package

Monday to Saturday including night, will be on a rotation schedule

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Provides patron information services at a library location; performs directly related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The principal function of an employee in this class is to provide routine reader’s advisory and ready reference services through a library location. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of a Librarian II or III but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with community groups, other library employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a public service environment.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK:

  • Provides guidance and assistance about the library and library resources to patrons using materials and sources at hand;
  • Uses software to locate items or check the availability, status, or other information about items;
  • Answers reference questions and provides patrons with instructions on how to use various components of the library, including copying machines, microfilm/fiche readers, on-line indexes, computers, software, internet services, etc.;
  • Coordinates interlibrary loans locally, statewide, nationwide, and worldwide, requiring familiarity with a variety of library databases;
  • Facilitates consortium lending, including preparing, packing, receiving, and unpacking shipments;
  • Performs graphic design work to produce newsletters, brochures, and promotional materials;
  • Ensures library equipment is in working order;
  • Ensures that patron service problems are resolved courteously and promptly, refers to other staff or departments as necessary;
  • Sorts and discards materials as directed;
  • Performs the duties of circulation classes as necessary to provide timely and effective service to patrons;
  • Provides guidance and demonstrations to new employees in similar positions;
  • Keeps supervisors informed of work progress, issues, and potential solutions;
  • Attends meetings and training to stay current on relevant practices and developments;
  • Responds to citizen inquiries courteously and promptly;
  • Coordinates regularly with others to enhance interdepartmental efficiency; and
  • Performs additional duties as required by the classification.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Substantial knowledge of library location services systems and procedures;
  • Substantial knowledge of the library collection appropriate to the assignment;
  • Substantial knowledge of public and reference computer systems and resources;
  • Substantial knowledge of library circulation systems and procedures utilized by the library system;
  • Substantial knowledge of library public service functions, procedures, policies, and organization;
  • Skill in listening and understanding the public service needs;
  • Ability to provide courteous customer service in an environment that may at times be stressful;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree Library Science, Associate of Arts in Library Technology, or related; and
  • Three to five years of library experience; or
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science, Library Information Systems, or related; and
  • Zero to two years of library experience; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • None.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively;
  • Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to produce and review a wide variety of library materials, written correspondence, reports and related materials in both electronic and hard copy form;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to access relevant library materials and operate a keyboard;
  • Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to turn, reach and grasp repetitively;
  • Sufficient strength and endurance, with or without reasonable accommodation to lift, carry, push, pull and move objects, through a full range of motion, up to 50 pounds occasionally, 30 pounds frequently and 20 pounds consistently;
  • Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to move about and to transport materials within the public service area.
